Martial Arts Saved My Life

I grew up in a housing estate on the uncompromising streets of the South Side of Johannesburg. I was surrounded by bullying, gangs, hustlers and violence growing up.

I began my martial arts training as a way to survive the desperate situation I found myself in, but along the way I learned that true martial artistry is about overcoming the violence inside. To this end, my martial arts  practice not only gave me the physical tools to defend myself, but equally important: the inner skills to take on the martial arts of everyday life more skillfully.

In the end while my thousands of hours of devotion to my martial arts practice has given me the amazing opportunity to coach all over the world – with my students being some of the worlds most elite warriors from special force operators to close protection teams – what I cherish most about what my martial arts practice has given me is the ability to purposefully choose to become fully attuned to the present moment with clarity, poise and equanimity.

Martial Arts Practice As a Life Performance Vehicle

Do you currently have a martial arts practice, or have you been thinking about starting?

Maybe you have been looking for a way to help you overcome the obstacles that you face in life?

Martial Arts on the face of it doesn’t seem the best way to supercharge your life. For most people who take up martial arts practice today, its either strictly for self-defense, or fitness or competition.

While I honor these motivations, it isn’t in my view the true path of martial artistry. In fact, I would go as far as saying that you can train for years for self-defense, to compete or even use it to get in shape, but yet never see the life performance benefits of that practice. For martial arts to help you flourish in life this has to be your primary goal. You also need a skilled coach that can teach you how to fully integrate the life performance aspects of martial arts training into your everyday life.

For the past decade this has been my focus. I went from training martial arts almost exclusively to learn how to fight, to focusing on taking the lessons from the mat positively, and productively into every aspect of my everyday life. Along the way I integrated my research as a social scientist into my practice.

The outcome: a perfect harmony of Martial performance with the ability to flow like an Artist in life!

 

Getting Started

I offer two coaching options:

  1. In-Person: You can choose to come to me at my 2nd home at Tree Roots Retreat in Rayong, Thailand. The duration is up to you, but the longer we can spend together the more I can help you achieve inner success so you can show up in life on your own terms. My suggestion is a minimum of 5-days. You can either do this as an individual package for yourself, with a partner, a group of friends or students (for instance if you have a martial arts academy).

2. Virtual: I now offer virtual coaching sessions. This is a great option if you can’t come out to spend time with me in-person, but many of my students combine virtual and in-person sessions as well.

MINDFULNESS-IN-ACTION

I spent several years as a social scientist researching the role mindfulness in action plays in leadership performance. I have integrated these findings into a martial arts process that will enable you to show up in life calm, present and focused.

EMBODIED-INTELLIGENCE

How you show up, all of you is crucial to life's success. This begins by not only understanding but being able to fully integrate all of yourself into your experience. I will show you how to harness the intelligence of body in service of your life's goals.

INNER MANAGEMENT

How well you are able to manage your inner state will dictate your fate. I will teach you practical tools, from breathing exercises to somatic (i.e. body) based strategies to enable you to keep calm in the choas of life.

FLOW PSYCHOLOGY

The benefits of finding flow in your life is numerous, from more enjoyment, focus, clarity and experiencing awe. Through our sessions together on the mat, I will teach you how to activate your flow state.
